Hello Homeschoolers! Winter is upon us, so it's time to review cancellation policies for CORE classes.
CORE Winter Weather Cancellation Policy:
CORE classes are canceled when Waterloo/Cedar
Falls public schools cancel due to winter weather. Public schools usually call
late starts due to poor early morning conditions for bused kids in outlying areas. Therefore CORE
classes generally do not cancel for late starts. Early dismissal does not impact morning CORE classes, but may effect afternoon
classes at held at Valley Lutheran. You will be contacted in case of
early dismissal.
This is the regular policy of CORE classes, but if a CORE teacher needs to make different arrangements due to personal circumstances, that teacher will contact you. At no time do we advise anyone to attempt travel, if your driving conditions are hazardous.
Metro Home Educators (MHE) is a support group for homeschooling families living in, or near, the Cedar Valley. We offer many opportunities for member families to enhance their homeschooling experience. There are three main components under the MHE umbrella: Co-op, CORE Classes and Supplemental Opportunities.
The purpose of the Co-op is to provide group experiences for our homeschool students. We also offer nursery and preschool for younger siblings of homeschoolers. Co-op is short for Cooperative and our Co-op is a cooperative venture. Parent participation is required. Starting September 2009, the Co-op will meet Friday Afternoons from 1:00-3:15 at Hammond Avenue Brethren Church in Waterloo. Co-op meets for 10 weeks in the fall and 10 weeks in the spring semester. At the end of each 10 week segment, Co-op students participate in a program that highlights their Co-op experiences. For more details, click on Co-op pages in the right hand column.
CORE stands for Christian Opportunites Reinforcing Education. CORE Classes are taught by experienced Christian teachers who want to support you in your home education. CORE Classes typically meet once a week during the regular school year for 1 to 2 1/2 hours. Elementary and Junior High classes will meet at Trinity Bible Church on Friday mornings; High School classes will meet at Valley Lutheran, both in Cedar Falls. For information on CORE Classes, click on CORE pages at the top right.
MHE offers many other benefits and activities for homeschool families. From fieldtrips, to 4-H club; from Mom's night out, to discount theater shows; there are many opportunities to experience homeschooling together and supplement your homeschool education. To find out what is available, click on Supplemental Opportunities in the top right hand column. And if you are interested in participating in Metro Home Educators, click on becoming a member. We'd love to have you!
If you are just starting out, or thinking about homeschooling, we recommend contacting the Network of Iowa Christian Home Educators (NICHE). Click on their quick link in the right sidebar. They have all the information to get you started.
